How to choose the perfect bridesmaids dresses

Selecting the right bridesmaid dresses for your bridal party doesn’t have to be the challenge everyone makes it out to be. Everyone has stories about the nightmare bridesmaid who won’t wear a certain style or colour, but choosing your bridesmaids is a whole other story. Whether you want to pick your bridesmaids dresses yourself or provide a dress guide for your maids to pick their own, the overall goal is that their dresses complement your wedding style so that you can look back on the pictures with absolute pleasure. Here are our top tips to ensure you nail your bridal party look.

Create a bridesmaid dress style guide

Bridesmaid dress shopping is exactly what Pinterest was created for. Here you can pin to your hearts delight all the dress styles, colours and lengths you favour. Then you can narrow down your selection or tighten your brief to your maids. I provided my bridesmaids with a range of blush shades, a budget to work towards as well as access to my Pinterest board for inspiration. My only pre-requisite is that they chose something that they could wear again. That then provided each bridesmaid with the flexibility to pick something that suited their style so that they were comfortable on the day – as well as fit my overall vision.

Choose a unifying element

Whether you decide to match your bridesmaids dresses or not, we’d recommend at least one characteristic of your bridesmaids full look to coordinate to tie your bridal party together style-wise. This could be the fabric of the dress, the colour or shade of colours or even the neckline or length of the dress. Or if you’re going full matching, perhaps you can shake it up with a different accessory either jewellery or a beautiful bolero.

Think about the material and colour

If your wedding dress is made of floaty, ethereal chiffon, then having structured and boned 50s bridesmaids dress might not be the best match. Think also about the setting of the wedding and how you will all look and feel on the day, as well as the colours you are using throughout the wedding.

Review your bridesmaid’s shapes and personal style

Our best friends all come in different shapes and sizes and it’s really hard to find a one style fits all dress to suit everyone. Take a look at what silhouettes would flatter their body types – one of my bridesmaid’s had recently given birth, and my other two were pregnant - so it was super important that they were all comfortable on the day. And don’t be afraid to undertake some alterations, either to pinch in at the waist or length to ensure a perfect fit too.

Needle & Thread

Hanson was a Needle & Thread bride in 2016 and we’re in love with their 2017 collection. Our favourite is the art deco inspired Constellation Lace Dress, which would tie in beautifully with both a lace and embellished bridal gown.

Adrianna Pappell

A month ago, I was a bridesmaid to one of my best friend’s wedding in Las Vegas. Whilst the bride went for a traditional ivory satin bridal gown, she wanted her bridesmaids dresses to fit the location of the wedding and the brief we were given to choose our dresses was ‘vintage embellished glam,’ a style that is super close to my heart. Whilst my Maya dress is now out of stock, this gorgeous 20s bridesmaids dress from Adrianna Pappell is the closest match we’ve found and available with international delivery.
